Introduction to Ryu
Welcome to Kiai........気合
Kiai is a word used in Martial Arts spirit. At a basic level it is a short cry (not a yell) just before or during a strike or technique. However, at the advanced level it is used as a form of coordinated energy release, a focused power explosion. It is a conscious inner gathering and release of physical power, mental will and breathing. The sound emanated is driven from the abdomen (hara) and focuses the whole body towards the target - the sum of the whole is greater than the parts.
We see this as an important element in how we practice martial arts not only developing both personal spirit and skills, but also conscious understanding of what we do and how we conduct ourselves.
What do we do?.
We teach a unique blend of Okinawa Shōtōkan Karate and Kobudō and we hope that you will find that this is an excellent way of keeping healthy whilst following ancient martial arts ways. You will find that you will not just improve physically but also gain an enriched self-confidence, better coordination and self-discipline.
Martial arts practices help both young and old to cultivate physical and mental health, contribute to building character, to fostering a sense of personal responsibility. Today Okinawa karate and kobudō provide much inspiration to many people around the world and in turn we feel that we make a meaningful positive contribution to society.
